Gender of a Person

The Gender Coding task will help you determine the sex of an individual and append a code to a field in your input table. Watch how simple it is to determine a person's gender.

Data Elements That Can Be Used:

  • Honorific - Mr, Mrs or Rabbi
  • First Name
  • Full Name - The name field does not have to be parsed into it's components. The application will parse on the fly and use honorific if it exists then the first name.

Possible values include:

  • M - Male
  • F - Female
  • C - Company
  • U - Unknown

Most tasks in Pre Post Office use a look up table. A Maintenance utility has been provided to facilitate edits, additions and deletions.

The Gender Coding task uses a gender table of over 108,000 given names across a number of name sources, for example:

  • Native American: Cheyenne and Dakotah
  • Spanish: Nevada and Sierra
  • French: Brie and Chardonnay
  • African: Saki and Simba
  • Welsh: Bryn and Rhett
  • Russian: Sasha and Tamara
  • Gypsy: Chik and Tawny
  • Italian: Giulia and Matteo
  • Japanese: Kimiko and Ringo

Questions about setting up Pre Post Office

When would the gender code "C" for Company be applied?

Answer

Many databases contain a contact name and company name in the same field. Using the Gender Coding task in Scrubs you can identify records that are not an individual such as "Dr. John Smith and Associates". In this case the record would be coded as "C".

I have found some names that are being coded as (U)nknow. How can I change this?

Answer

There are names in the gender table that are coded as "U"nknown, such as Pat and Sandy. Changing an entry's value, or adding new names is easily accomplished. Have a look at the tutorial on Maintaining System Tables.
